Over time, officials began to view the ARV as a vehicle platform equipped with a suite of advanced reconnaissance capabilities, with an open system architecture that can sense, shoot, move, communicate and remain transportable as part of the Naval Expeditionary Force. PM LAV is leading the acquisition planning effort to help realize this next-generation reconnaissance vehicle.

ONR is conducting research on advanced technologies to inform requirements, technology readiness assessments and competitive prototyping efforts for the ARV.

In , ONR selected two vendors to design, fabricate and test full-scale technology demonstration platforms. ONR has partnered with industry to build two technology demonstrator vehicles for evaluation. The first is a base platform that will comprise current, state-of-the-art technologies and standard weapons systems designed around a notional price point. In support of acquisition activities, PM LAV anticipates the release of an acquisition program Request for Information in May and an Industry Day later in the year to support a competitive prototyping effort.

The Corps expects a Material Development Decision before fiscal year The Corps believes the ARV will support the capability demands of the next generation of armored reconnaissance. Continued training on the system can be conducted by the units using the embedded training mode. Thanks to advances in technology, Marines can initiate a built-in test to conduct a system check of the components that make up the ATWS to help the operator and maintainer diagnose and troubleshoot the system, a feature not previously available on the legacy turret, said Forkin.

The operator can also use an embedded training mode in the ATWS, which is software driven, to support individual and crew training by simulating the firing of the weapon system while viewing targets through the biocular display unit.
